Syndie Funaro

My name is Syndie Funaro and I am from Brooklyn, New York. I am currently studying Neuroscience on the pre-medical track and aspire to become a physician in the future. Throughout high school, I was a dedicated member of my school’s Varsity Volleyball and Softball team; at UNC, I plan on rooting on the Tar Heels at each of their games! Other than athletics, I love traveling to different places as I sample the local cuisine, learn of all the cultural traditions and explore the many landmarks. One of the best words that I can use to describe myself is, “adventurous;” I enjoy trying new activities and foods wherever I go. Some of my favorite pastimes include painting, yoga, dancing and playing with my dog, Henry! Along with many other fun facts, I hit an out-of-the-park home run on my Senior Softball night, have been to the highest point on Maui and was honored at Yankee Stadium twice in one year. This past summer, I was also featured as a NY1 Scholar Athlete, receiving my own news segment for my athletic and scholastic achievements in high school. I am known by others to be a source of laughter and a helping hand when needed. Throughout my college experience, I intend on studying abroad, participating in volunteer organizations and trying a new sport.

Jill Koski

Hi! My name is Jill Koski, and I was born and raised in East New Market, Maryland. I graduated in May 2018 from Saints Peter and Paul High School and am currently a Nutrition major at UNC on the pre-med track. Growing up I played softball and soccer year round and was also a member of my school’s swim team. I was involved in Delaware 4-H and Maryland Farm Bureau for many years through which I was able to meet some of my life-long friends and learn many of the valuable skills that I feel have gotten me to where I am today. I love spending time with my family, being outside, and going to the beach. I am obsessed with coffee, country music, light purple, and my yellow lab, Maggie. On weekends you will find me cheering on the Tar Heels at sporting events or at Sunday morning Mass at the Newman Center.

Sandhya Sundar Rajan

Hi, my name is Sandhya, but I just simply go by Sandy. As a freshman at UNC, I am majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. I intend to explore the pre-med track in college. I am really interested in the field of medicine and hope to make to that my career someday. I am really enjoying my time at UNC-Chapel Hill and I am loving all my classes. I really watching TV shows and movies in my free time.

Annie Zhang

Hey y’all, my name’s Annie and I’m a first year student at UNC Chapel Hill. Coming into college, I applied as undecided but I had the plans and confidence to pursue pharmacy as a career. Two weeks into college and one particularly hysterical night later, I’ve completely dropped my plans to go into the med field and have experienced both great stress and liberation at my decision. Perhaps business will suit me better? Who knows honestly. When people said college was a time to really form your identity, I didn’t realize how that also meant deconstructing and redefining everything you’ve built for yourself over the years. It’s scary, but I guess I’ll try to take a deep breath, accept that I can’t foresee the future no matter how hard I plan, and just cruise along this journey of self discovery while singing some tunes. Singing has always been a therapeutic hobby for me anyways.

Alexander Morrow

Alexander Morrow is an undergraduate student at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is currently pursuing a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering with minors in Chemistry and Physics. His interests lie in the applications of nuclear chemistry, nuclear physics, and quantum mechanics as models for regenerative medicine and medical microdevices. Alexander was the President of Charles D. Owen High School’s BETA Club chapter (2017-2018). Alexander received the Colonel Robinson Scholarship from Chapel Hill to pursue an advanced career in the STEM and medical fields.

Hanna Nettles

Hi everyone! My name is Hanna and I’m a Psychology major. I’m incredibly interested in medicine and hope to become a surgeon. I didn’t know I wanted to be a surgeon for sure until I shadowed an interventional cardiologist at Duke (not a traitor I swear) my senior year. I was able to go into the operating room and see my doctor operate on a patient right in front of me. When I saw the patient’s beating heart, I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

I became involved in research during my senior year of high school at NC State Veterinary School studying pig intestines. I fell in love with my lab environment and the work I was doing. I never knew that over six months I could become so immersed in a topic I would’ve never previously considered. I found myself trying to start conversations with random people just so I could talk to them about my studies in pig intestines. I couldn’t wait to go to the lab and the entire day I’d be jazzed about tying off pig intestines or running another set of samples. Through UNC I hope to continue research and volunteer at the hospital as much as I can.

Outside of academics, I play indoor and beach volleyball, paint with acrylics, and dance (either through clubs or Just Dance 2012-2018). I love murder mysteries and movies with twist endings. My ULTIMATE recommendation is Memento- it’s my all time favorite movie nobody @ me. I’m so excited about my time at Carolina and I can’t wait to see where my interests take me!

Carson Jones

I’m Carson Jones from Asheville, North Carolina. I have two biological brothers, three step-brothers, and two step-sisters. Even though me and my biological brothers have the same parents, they are both white with red hair, so we always get a few confused looks when we tell people we are brothers. I grew up a being a devout UNC fan, so being here as a student is a dream come true. Ever since I was little, I’ve enjoyed learning and bettering myself in the classroom, and that’s in part because of the strong base I was provided with in elementary. I went to private school for the beginning of my elementary school career, went to public school, and then went back to private school for high school. My high school experience at an all-boys boarding school was different than most, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love sports, particularly football, hanging out with friends, hiking, and being with my family.  I love the Pittsburgh Steelers, almost as much as anything in this world. I’m a Christian. The Batman trilogy is the best trilogy of all time and The Dark Knight is the best movie of all time. If all goes according to plan, I want to be a team doctor for some sports team in the future.

Caroline Collins

Hi! My name is Caroline Collins, but you can call me Carol.  I am a double major in Biology and Vocal Music Performance, so don’t be surprised if you see me running directly from a music rehearsal to my chem lab.  I have been studying music since I was 6, and began competing both regionally and nationally when I was 15.  Regarding the Biology major, I just really like science and hope to one day be a surgeon. My hobbies include going to sleep before 2 am, waking up after 8 am, and spending time with people.  I am an avid horoscope-reader, even though I do not necessarily believe what they say (#L4L #Libra4Life).  You can often find me in a practice room in the basement of Hill Hall working on my music, at Davis Library studying, or at Lenoir talking really loud.  I was recently a vegan for one day. I’m available to talk about either opera or anatomy and physiology any time!

Chaz Crosby

Hi, I am Chaz Crosby and I’m a first year at UNC-Chapel Hill with a major in psychology and an aspiration to attend medical school. I live in Raleigh, NC with my mom, dad, little sister and puppy. I attended Ravenscroft School for 11 years. I played lacrosse and field hockey in high school. I have taken part in several leadership positions and community service endeavors in high school and I hope to do the same on UNC’s campus. I have always had a passion for social justice issues and medicine. Some of my favorite shows  are The Office, Stranger Things, and Parks & Rec. A few things that I love include good documentaries, eating, sports, shopping, working out and hanging with friends and family. At UNC, I plan to soak up the many opportunities that this campus has to offer in regards to STEM internships, networking opportunities, clubs and athletic events. I love traveling and new adventures so I can not wait to explore and learn more about the areas of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. I’m excited for what these 4 years have to offer and can not wait to be even more immersed in UNC’s diverse community.

Katy Meier

Hey everyone! My name is Katy Meier and I’m from Davidson, North Carolina. I’m here as a freshman at this amazing school called UNC Chapel Hill to study nursing and I am oh so excited for what that future holds. In my free time I enjoy baking and reading. In addition to that, I love watching almost anything on Netflix because what college student doesn’t? I’d like to end this brief biography with a quote from Saint Teresa of Calcutta that I like to use as my life motto, “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one come to you without leaving happier”.
